PRESS RELEASE
January 24, 2008

Stephen Barclay selected as Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North East Cambridgeshire

We are delighted to announce that Stephen Barclay was selected as our Prospective Parliamentary Candidate in the Open Primary meeting at the Sir Harry Smith Community College, Whittlesey on Saturday, beating strong competition from the other 5 candidates.

Steve has a proven record in business and is currently Director of Regulatory Affairs at Barclays Bank (no relation!).  He has served as an Officer in the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and has fought two General Elections in Manchester Blackley and Lancaster & Wyre, a rural constituency where he was a member of the NFU.

He read history at Peterhouse, Cambridge before qualifying as a solicitor.  He particular enjoys rugby, jazz piano and is a qualified sky diver.  Steve and his fiancée Karen are getting married in September and will make their home in the Fens.

The selection process was culminated in an Open Primary where six finalists were presented to party members plus any elector, regardless of political affiliation, at a meeting held at Sir Harry Smith College, Whittlesey.  All candidates were questioned in a “Jeremy Paxman type interview” by John Elworthy, the Editor Elect of the Cambs Times/Wisbech Standard.  This was followed by questions from the audience and a short summing up by the individual candidates.  A ballot was conducted and the first candidate to receive more than 50% of the votes cast was declared the winner.

Members of the North East Cambridgeshire Conservative Association present then endorsed the decision of the Primary selection.
